History

The Aldwych Theatre opened in 1905 and was designed by W. G. R. Sprague, one of the key theatre architects of Edwardian London. Built as part of a pair with the neighbouring Novello Theatre, it quickly became part of the fabric of Theatreland.
The theatre is especially associated with the famous Aldwych farces of the 1920s and 1930s, a run of popular comedies that helped cement its place in West End history. Later, it became an important London home for the Royal Shakespeare Company, bringing major classical productions into the heart of the capital.
In more recent decades, the Aldwych has become strongly associated with large-scale musical theatre. Productions including Fame, Dirty Dancing, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and Tina: The Tina Turner Musical have helped make it one of the West End’s most recognisable musical venues.

Covent Garden is the nearest Underground station, with Holborn, Temple and Charing Cross also within reasonable walking distance. The theatre sits on Aldwych, close to the Strand, Drury Lane and the eastern edge of Covent Garden, making it a very convenient venue for central London restaurants, hotels and transport links.
