Donmar Warehouse

The Donmar Warehouse first opened as a theatre in 1977, after the Royal Shakespeare Company acquired and converted the former warehouse space. The building itself had earlier uses connected with Covent Garden’s commercial life, including time as part of the area’s market and warehouse landscape.

The venue became internationally recognised under artistic directors including Sam Mendes, Michael Grandage, Josie Rourke and Michael Longhurst. Its small scale has always been central to its identity: productions at the Donmar often feel concentrated, intense and unusually close to the audience.

Over the years, the theatre has produced new writing, reworked classics, American and European drama, Shakespeare and small-scale musicals. Many Donmar productions have gone on to wider lives in the West End, on Broadway or on tour, giving the theatre an influence far larger than its 251-seat auditorium might suggest.

Covent Garden is the nearest Underground station, with Leicester Square and Tottenham Court Road also within walking distance. The theatre is in Seven Dials, close to restaurants, shops and other West End venues, so it is easy to combine with dinner or drinks before or after the show.

The Donmar is ideal if you value acting, writing and atmosphere over spectacle. Because the auditorium is small, tickets can be limited and popular productions often sell quickly. It is worth booking early, and the Seven Dials location makes it especially easy to plan a relaxed pre-theatre meal nearby.
