West End Theatre Guide
Menier Chocolate Factory
An intimate Southwark theatre in a former chocolate factory, known for acclaimed musicals, plays and close-up performances.
The Menier Chocolate Factory sits tucked away near Borough Market and London Bridge, inside a former nineteenth-century chocolate factory. Small, atmospheric and highly regarded, it has become one of London’s most important Off-West-End venues, especially for musical revivals, plays and productions that often go on to wider success.
What’s On at Menier Chocolate Factory
History
The Menier Chocolate Factory is a small but influential Off-West-End theatre, housed in a former 1870s chocolate factory near Borough Market.
The Menier Chocolate Factory opened as a theatre in 2004, transforming a former industrial building into one of London’s most distinctive intimate performance spaces. The venue takes its name from the Menier Chocolate Company, whose London factory was part of Southwark’s nineteenth-century commercial life.
Its scale is central to its appeal. With around 180 seats, the theatre gives audiences a close, direct connection to the stage, making it well suited to musical revivals, chamber pieces, sharp comedies and productions where detail matters. The venue also includes a bar and restaurant, helping it feel like a complete theatre-night destination rather than just an auditorium.
Although it is outside the traditional West End, the Menier has had a major influence on London theatre. A number of its productions have transferred to larger West End houses or beyond, proving that small-scale work can have a much bigger afterlife. Its reputation rests on quality, intimacy and a strong record for discovering or reimagining shows in a fresh way.
Getting Here
London Bridge is the nearest Underground and National Rail station, with Borough also within walking distance. The theatre is close to Borough Market, Southwark Street and the river, making it a convenient option for food before or after a performance. From London Bridge, the walk is straightforward through the Borough area.
Grand Circle Tips
The Menier is ideal if you like intimate theatre and the feeling of discovering a production before it becomes widely known. Because the venue is small, popular shows can sell quickly. The surrounding Borough Market area is excellent for food, but it can be very busy, so booking ahead is sensible for a relaxed pre-theatre meal.
Restaurant Recommendation
Arabica Borough Market
A lively Eastern Mediterranean restaurant in Borough Market, Arabica is a convenient pre-theatre choice for the Menier Chocolate Factory, with generous sharing plates and a buzzy atmosphere close to the venue.
