Young Vic

The Young Vic opened in 1970 on The Cut, close to the Old Vic. It was originally conceived as a more accessible kind of theatre: a place where high-quality work could be offered at lower prices, with a direct, informal and energetic relationship between performers and audiences.

The building was designed by Bill Howell and was first intended to be temporary, but the theatre quickly became an important part of London’s cultural life. Its main auditorium was known for flexibility and intimacy, allowing productions to reshape the relationship between stage and audience rather than relying on a fixed traditional layout.
